Edvard MunchThe Scream

size: 91x73,5 cm
place: National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo

When speaking of 'The Scream', one should speak of 'Screams', as Munch created as many as four versions of this painting, using different painting techniques. The painter was clearly fascinated by this motif, and apart from the earlier sketches of Despair, which were a kind of prelude to The Scream, images of a deformed, waving figure on a bridge, together with a flaming background, were created between 1893 and 1910. His works, although controversial, have permanently passed into the canon of culture and even pop culture. They have already inspired their contemporaries, such as the artist's Polish friend Stanisław Przybyszewski, who called The Scream a novel about the madness that engulfs - indeed! - a painter constantly trying to paint sound.

Three-dimensional depth of image

Screw Art is made up of thousands of screws which, screwed close together into a fir board but at different depths, create an extraordinary three-dimensional sculptural relief. Each of the 70,000 screw heads becomes a tiny steel canvas for the artists. The multitude of colours, clever design, fascinating chiaroscuro, and masterful precision give the works, inspired by the works of the great masters, a new dimension. Industrial screws turn out to be a graceful material in the hands of the young talents, and the steel rawness is transformed into delicate paintings.
