Sandro BotticelliBirth of Venus

year of creation: ca. 1478 or ca. 1485
type: tempera on canvas
size: 172,5x278,5 cm
place: Galleria degli Uffizi, Florene

The author of the work that has become a symbol of the Renaissance was not actually called Boticelli at all. Also, the name Sandro is an abbreviation of the proper Alessandro. So how did Alessandro di Mariano Felipepi become Boticelli? The Italian artist had two brothers - Giovanni, the eldest, was given the nickname 'boticelli', or 'barrel', because of his short height and corpulent figure. Sandro probably took over the nickname after him, which has become so associated with him that today his actual name has faded into oblivion in the popular consciousness.

Three-dimensional depth of image

Screw Art is made up of thousands of screws which, screwed close together into a fir board but at different depths, create an extraordinary three-dimensional sculptural relief. Each of the 70,000 screw heads becomes a tiny steel canvas for the artists. The multitude of colours, clever design, fascinating chiaroscuro, and masterful precision give the works, inspired by the works of the great masters, a new dimension. Industrial screws turn out to be a graceful material in the hands of the young talents, and the steel rawness is transformed into delicate paintings.
