Michelangelo BuonarottiThe Creation  of Adam

year of creation: 1511
type: fresc
size: 280x570 cm
place: Sistine Chapel, Vatican City

The Sistine Chapel's vaulted ceiling was originally intended to be decorated only with the figures of the twelve apostles. This was at least the wish of Michelangelo's commissioner, Pope Julius II, when he instructed the artist to paint a fresco in 1508. The artist resisted, believing that this was too modest a motif and that the Chapel deserved more. There was even a dispute with the Pope, who eventually decided to give Buonarotti a free hand. It took four years to complete the sketches for the composition, the key element of which is an unprecedented depiction of the miracle of creation.

Three-dimensional depth of image

Screw Art is made up of thousands of screws which, screwed close together into a fir board but at different depths, create an extraordinary three-dimensional sculptural relief. Each of the 70,000 screw heads becomes a tiny steel canvas for the artists. The multitude of colours, clever design, fascinating chiaroscuro, and masterful precision give the works, inspired by the works of the great masters, a new dimension. Industrial screws turn out to be a graceful material in the hands of the young talents, and the steel rawness is transformed into delicate paintings.
