Władysław PodkowińskiFrenzy of Exaltation

year of creation: 1894
type: oil on canvas
size: 310x275 cm
place: National Museum, Cracow

Podkowiński was preoccupied with the vision ultimately immortalised in 'Frenzy of Exultation' for at least several years. According to his friends' accounts, the artist had been working on the work since 1889. In 1894, finally, in an atmosphere of sensation and scandal, he showed it in "Zachęta", only to destroy the painting with his own hands at the end of the exposition. He never explained why he decided to cut with a knife the canvas to which he had devoted five years of his life, but a salon rumour had it that Podkowiński did so when a well-known socialite, the object of the painter's unfulfilled feelings, was recognised in a naked woman.

Three-dimensional depth of image

Screw Art is made up of thousands of screws which, screwed close together into a fir board but at different depths, create an extraordinary three-dimensional sculptural relief. Each of the 70,000 screw heads becomes a tiny steel canvas for the artists. The multitude of colours, clever design, fascinating chiaroscuro, and masterful precision give the works, inspired by the works of the great masters, a new dimension. Industrial screws turn out to be a graceful material in the hands of the young talents, and the steel rawness is transformed into delicate paintings.
