Paul GauguinTahitian women on the beach

year of creation: 1891
type: oil on canva
size: 61x91 cm
place: Musée d'Orsay, Paris

The psychological term 'Gaugin syndrome' is named after this French artist. It explains the enactment of revolutionary changes in the so-called middle age. This is exactly what Gaugin, previously a sailor, then a stable (though barely 34 years old!) employee of the Paris stock exchange, husband, and father of five children, did when, after the stock market crash, he decided to quit his job and devote himself entirely to painting and travelling. From then on, art was to be the family's main source of income, but as Gaugin was not doing well in this profession at the time, the family soon found itself on the brink of poverty. This was not accepted by his Danish wife Matte, who moved to Copenhagen with their children. Gaugin, meanwhile, set his sights on travel, especially exotic travel, eventually settling in his beloved Tahiti.

Three-dimensional depth of image

Screw Art is made up of thousands of screws which, screwed close together into a fir board but at different depths, create an extraordinary three-dimensional sculptural relief. Each of the 70,000 screw heads becomes a tiny steel canvas for the artists. The multitude of colours, clever design, fascinating chiaroscuro, and masterful precision give the works, inspired by the works of the great masters, a new dimension. Industrial screws turn out to be a graceful material in the hands of the young talents, and the steel rawness is transformed into delicate paintings.
